The front door was finally locked. Everywhere had been cleaned and Rosie was ready for a bath and an early night when there was a knock at the door that sheâd just closed. Through the windows she could see Kit waiting, a rucksack on his back. If it had been anyone else she might have been tempted to hide until theyâd gone â it had been that kind of day.
âHi,â she said as she opened the door. âEverything alright?â
âSure. Are you ready?â
âReady for what?â
âSwimming.â
Rosie blinked. âWe didnât have an arrangementâ¦â She frowned. âIs this Tabithaâs doing?â
âShe said you wanted me to teach you how to swim. Said youâd be up for tonightâ¦â He paused and then grinned. âLittle cow! I knew I should have asked you rather than take her word for it.â
Rosie smiled. âShe said I needed to learn how to swim and that youâd be the person to teach me, but I never agreed to go.â
âWell, now I feel like an idiot.â
âItâs not that I donât appreciate the offer, but Iâm not really into swimming, and if I was, quite honestly, Iâm exhausted right now.â
âWe could easily make it another night. Itâs really no bother to me at all.â
Rosie shook her head. âI really donât think swimming is me.â
âSo you donât want me to take you swimming?â
âIâm sure weâd have fun butââ
âYou really hate the water.â
âTabitha told you that much?â
âYes, and itâs actually why she thought I should take you. I thought she told you that sheâd ask me and that it was all sorted.â
âShe didnât say a word â because she guessed Iâd turn the offer down if she did. Probably thought I wouldnât refuse you if you were standing on the doorstep ready to go.â
âSheâs sneaky like that. Well, as Iâve got my stuff together, I guess Iâll just go alone.â
âOh! Now I feel badâ¦â
âDonât. It wonât bother me. Iâve found this great little spot on the river, lovely and calm⦠Actuallyâ â he grinned â âI think you found that for me last night by accident.â
Rosie laughed. âStop it! I already feel bad enough about that!â
âSo you should.â
âIf I could make it up to you I would.â
âYou can.â
âIf you say by swimming with you tonight, Iâm going to clobber you, guilty or not.â
âOK, it was worth a try.â
âIt was a valiant effort,â Rosie agreed.
As she looked at him now, smiling, relaxed â her friend â she was tempted to change her mind. Not because she wanted to learn to swim, but because heâd gone to the effort to come by and was willing to make the time for her, and because she would have enjoyed his company. But if Nicole got to hear about it, well⦠things were sticky enough in that regard without making them worse.
Rosie understood just what was going on â at least as far as Tabitha was concerned. For some reason sheâd decided Rosie and Kit ought to be together, and for more than swimming lessons. But it wasnât going to happen, no matter what Tabitha did to engineer it.
